WAFS 106 – Thermal Mass Flow Measurement

Downloads

The WAFS 106 is an insertion type thermal mass flow meter designed for measuring air flow in industrial piping systems. It is suited for plants that need reliable air-flow measurement without replacing an existing pipeline with a full-bore flow meter arrangement. For maintenance and plant engineering teams, the main consideration is whether the meter can provide useful flow information at the point where air is being generated, distributed or consumed.

As an industrial air flow meter, the WAFS 106 can be considered for applications where monitoring air movement through a pipeline is important for process control, utility management or consumption analysis. Measuring air flow at different points in a plant can help engineers understand how much air is being used by individual sections, machines or processes. This information can also support routine checks when actual consumption differs from expected operating conditions.

How Can the WAFS 106 Help Monitor Air Flow in a Plant?

The WAFS 106 can be used where engineers need to monitor air flow through an existing pipe without installing a conventional inline meter across the complete line. Its insertion-type arrangement allows the sensing element to be positioned inside the pipeline while the main pipe remains part of the existing system. This can be useful when several air lines need to be monitored and changing the complete pipe section would add unnecessary installation work.

For plants using compressed air as a utility, industrial flow meters for air can provide information that is otherwise difficult to obtain from compressor-level measurements alone. A compressor may show total generation, but point-of-use measurement helps engineers see where that air is actually being consumed. Comparing readings between different sections can support troubleshooting, equipment checks and identification of unusual consumption patterns.

Where Can an Industrial Air Flow Meter Be Useful?

The WAFS 106 can be considered for air-flow monitoring at equipment lines, utility distribution points and other suitable industrial piping locations. The measurement data can help maintenance teams establish a baseline for normal operation and investigate changes over time.

For example, if an air-consuming machine normally operates within a known flow range but its demand increases without a corresponding production change, the flow measurement can give the maintenance team a starting point for investigation. The same approach can be used when checking distribution losses or comparing air consumption between different production areas.

What Should Engineers Check Before Selecting the WAFS 106?

Before selecting the WAFS 106, plant engineers should confirm the pipe size, gas type, operating pressure and expected flow range for the measurement point. The standard configuration is intended for compressed air, with a measurement range of 0.1 Nm/s to 250 Nm/s and a pressure rating of 0–16 bar. The model selector can be used to configure the meter based on pipe size and available options, helping engineers select a suitable arrangement for the application rather than relying on a standard instrument configuration.

The installation point should also be reviewed before the meter is ordered. The flow conditions, available pipe length and accessibility of the measurement location can affect how useful the reading will be in day-to-day plant operation. For compressed-air systems, selecting a representative measurement point allows the WAFS 106 to be used for monitoring equipment-level consumption, comparing different sections of the distribution network and identifying changes in normal air demand.
